Business of the Month: Love and Hummus

La Cocina volunteer, Priya Alexander, caught up with La Cocina’s Business of the Month for March, Donna Sky of Love and Hummus.  Keep reading to learn more about all the love that goes into each jar of this tasty hummus!

It all began back when Donna and her mother were be-boppin to Motown and cooking dinner together. This wasn’t the brewing of a new Jackson duo, but the start, unbeknownst to Donna, of her culinary career. Her fond memories of spending time with her mother in the kitchen have stamped a spirit of creating easy, delectable cooking experiences for people she loves, whether it be for a party or for her four year old daughter.

Donna found her specialty in hummus when she experimented with fresh flavors, like lemon and thyme, which friends eagerly craved more. She often didn’t find time to make hummus, and found the other alternatives in the grocery store to be overly processed, as we often find the case to be with a lot of food products.

Enter Love and Hummus. Her tasty, organic dips flourished with a dollop of her commitment and a dash of La Cocina’s help. Apart from providing invaluable business resources, like graphic designing and food scientists, Donna found a community of entrepreneurs at La Cocina’s incubator to turn to for moral support after what often turned into long 16 hour days.

The rewards have been reaped with her products now in Whole Foods and Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco. She has her eyes set on growing Love and Hummus nationally of course, but would also love to teach others how to cook, maybe on her own food show someday. Stay tuned! I know her daughter will be watching, only this time with Justin Bieber in the background.

2 large seedless English cucumbers, or 5 Persian cucumbers

  • A jar or 2 of your favorite Love and Hummus Co. hummus

For garnish

  • Shredded carrots
  • Diced sweet red peppers

  • Directions:
Slice cucumbers in half lengthwise and trim ends. Then cut into 1-inch pieces. Scoop out the center of each piece of cucumber with a melon baller, and fill with about 1/2 teaspoon hummus. Garnish and serve.
