La Cocina Fact Sheet

LA COCINA- Fact Sheet

About La Cocina:

La Cocina is a groundbreaking business incubator designed to reduce the obstacles that often prevent low-income food entrepreneurs from creating successful and sustainable small businesses. By providing affordable, shared, commercial kitchen space, an array of industry-specific technical assistance and services, and access to market opportunities, La Cocina works with entrepreneurs as they launch, grow, and formalize successful food businesses. The organization’s vision is that program participants become economically self-sufficient and contribute to a vibrant and diverse economy doing what they love to do.

How we do it:

We rely on grants for approximately half of our costs, while our own revenues from events, classes, and other programs fund the remainder. Our operating budget allows us to support 30 to 40 businesses each year; these businesses, in turn, generate an estimated $2 million in local revenue.

Our Businesses:

Home to 30 businesses and a growing roster of graduates, La Cocina represents all aspects of local food from gourmet catering to specialty products to farmers’ market stands. As a result of these businesses and La Cocina’s support, community jobs have been created and thousands have been introduced to the flavors of the world.

The businesses of La Cocina sell their products locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally. Entrepreneur’s products can be found at retailers like Whole Foods Markets, Andronico’s, Bi-Rite, Berkeley Bowl, Rainbow Grocery and the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Our Events & Activities

La Cocina works with community and corporate partners, businesses, and staff to hold a number of culinary events open to the public, culminating in the San Francisco Street Food Festival. This annual event brings together micro-entrepreneurs, informal food vendors, and renowned chefs to celebrate great street food, entrepreneurial spirit and the vibrant communities of San Francisco. Leading up to the Street Food Festival, our partners co-host momentum building events like the Small Business Street Food Competition and a ten-day scavenger hunt to San Francisco. We also host a thought-provoking Food Conference over the post-festival weekend.

In addition, we offer monthly cooking classes, create custom corporate team-building events, facilitate catering by our businesses, run a kiosk at the Ferry Building, and create gift boxes full of treats from the La Cocina kitchen.
